At Tech Ed 2007 in Orlando, Florida, I was able to get some time with Charlie Chung, Senior Program Manager, to record a quick interview around some enhancements in the Edge Transport role and some other Transport related items in Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

Thanks for that. One comment on the Edge combined with ISA on a single box: Generally, the recommended way to implement ISA publishing Exchange for OWA etc is to have the ISA server acting as the internal firewall (between the internal and perimeter networks) and as a member of the domain. This is done so that you don't have to open a raft of ports in the internal firewall so that ISA can do domain authentication etc. The Edge requires that the server is not a member of the domain and it is recommended to put it within the perimeter network, with a firewall between it and the internal network. So the 2 don't seem very suited to working well on the same box. Any comments or corrections would be highly appreciated as we get similar questions from our customers a lot and it would be great to be able to provide them with a '1 box' solution. Wouldn't it have been nice if we could have had an option to install an Edge server on a domain member where ISA was configured to protect it.

I have an outstanding position at our company, a cutting edge company looking for an experienced very senior level Team Lead Messaging Architect to join our MS Exchange 2007 team. I do not want to interupt your blogging, but if anyone is interested or knows of anyone, please let me know! Thank you so much!

As per Microsoft Web Site: ISA server 2006 can only be installed on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 32-bit operating system with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit. Exchange 2007 Edge server requires 64-bit of Windows to run. So the two products cannot simply co-exist on the same physical box. Does anybody knows when Microsoft is going to release 64-bit version of ISA2006 server?
