This was considered, but it was felt that most users wouldn't want to get messages of that nature on a regular basis and that they probably wouldn't look at them.

During a "How MS IT Rolled out 2007" workshop we had a discussion on this. It came up that users would basically have to every single day check out their "going to be deleted folder" or else they could lose something they didn't mean to. What if a user is out of the office for the day? Or a couple days?

The class kind of agreed that if the system had the ability to be configured to run once per week it would be easier on the users. They could then know "Hey on Thursday I need to check out that folder." Sure items might be 6 days behind on being expired, but the end result is they still do expire and users have a better chance of remembering to check the folder and move things to a safer place if need be.
